Prison Relationships: Friendship or Transaction?

The supporting characters around Geum-ja in the film appear on the surface to be warm helpers. But their relationships go beyond the category of ordinary human connection. All the ties Geum-ja formed through 13 years of prison life are closer to a 'functional network' woven together by each person's needs under the enormous goals of survival and revenge. They provide Geum-ja with the resources she needs (information, materials, physical assistance), playing the role of physically completing her revenge plan.

1. Physical Resources and Assistance for Survival

Geum-ja's revenge does not stop at a simple emotional act of retribution. To bring Baek Han-sang to ruin, concrete evidence and tools were needed. In this process, the fellow inmates each exercised their own expertise.

• Woo So-yeong's Physical Support: Woo So-yeong, who suffered from chronic kidney disease, provided Geum-ja with the decisive help of donating a kidney. Beyond simple medical assistance, this becomes the occasion for Geum-ja to solidify her status as a survivor and form a debt-ridden relationship for the subsequent revenge process. After release, Woo So-yeong goes even further — providing actual technical support in manufacturing the firearm Geum-ja will use, based on the gun blueprint given by Go Seon-suk.
• Go Seon-suk's Information Support: Go Seon-suk, a seasoned inmate, provides Geum-ja with the decisive clue of the Dhammapada. This is not a mere Buddhist scripture — it holds the practical value of being a gun blueprint, playing a decisive role in Geum-ja securing the 'weapon' she needed for revenge.
• Oh Su-hee's Aesthetic and Technical Support: Oh Su-hee runs a craft workshop and makes the silver ornament for attachment to the gun. This 'pretty and ornate' decoration imparts a human aesthetic to the cold act of revenge, serving also as a device showing that Geum-ja is not simply a killing machine.

2. Social Access and the Flow of Information

Revenge is an information war. To approach Baek Han-sang and bring him down, Geum-ja needed external links that could identify his private life and vulnerabilities.

• Park Yi-jeong's Fake Marriage: Park Yi-jeong takes on the most important role as 'point of access' in Geum-ja's plan. By entering into a fake marriage with Baek Han-sang, she becomes the channel penetrating deep into his private life. Through this Geum-ja obtains information about Baek Han-sang's assets and daily life, which forms the foundation of the final plan for his ruin.
• Kim Yang-hee's Provision of Lodgings: Kim Yang-hee's help in providing Geum-ja with stable lodgings after release built the minimum 'safety net' Geum-ja needed to return to society. This shows that her return to society was not simply a matter of rushing out of prison, but a meticulously planned process of social reintegration.

3. The Performative Mask of 'Kindness'

All the assistance from these helpers was made possible through the mask of 'kindness' Geum-ja performed in the closed space of prison. Geum-ja used this kindness to gain people's trust and goodwill, and that goodwill was in turn converted into a 'debt' for revenge. The inmates could not refuse Geum-ja's requests because they had received help from her. Thus all of Geum-ja's actions were a perfectly calculated performance oscillating between the two emotions of 'atonement' and 'revenge.'
